CASA HOGAR is a Germany-based initiative for development work in Colombia, which focuses on the education of women.
The primary aim of CASA HOGAR is to create a place for girls in the Colombian region of Chocó where they are safe from exploitation and prostitution, where they do not have to fight for their daily survival; a place where they can experience empowerment, where they can study and receive a degree that qualifies them for university: a house and a school.

CASA HOGAR – pronounced: kása ogár – is Spanish and can literally be translated into English as: „house hearth“. In Latin America „casa hogar“ is a fixed term and means something like „home“. Someone who says „casa hogar“ thinks of a safe place and of carefree well-being. We want to offer such a place to the students in Istmina.

In January 2015, the young physician Dr. Theodor Rüber travels to Colombia to work as an intern in a hospital in Chocó for a few weeks. Theodor Rüber, deeply touched by the fate of the people there, reaches out to Bishop Julio García. The Bishop has been working in the Chocó for five years, leading a self-sacrificing fight for the future of the young people and against misery. Through various educational projects, Julio and his co-workers have tried to give particularly girls and women a perspective.
When Theodor Rüber returns to Germany, he is determined not to remain indifferent to the situation in the Chocó. He gathers a few friends around him, shares his experiences and lays out his plan. Everyone understands: The girls in Istmina need a perspective. They need a house where they can live.
At the beginning of 2016 construction works begin; the vision becomes the deed.
The plan of CASA HOGAR develops: In order to actually extend the Colegio to nine school years, school buildings have to be extended, operating costs paid and staff hired. The team of CASA HOGAR grows – and so does the revenue.

The charity project CASA HOGAR aims at improving living conditions of the mostly indigenous and underprivileged people of the Colombian Chocó. The path to this goal starts with providing better education for young women and girls – whereby education means not only providing access to schools but above all contributing to personal growth and therewith creating new perspectives. We see ourselves as companions on this journey. We want to understand the needs and ideas of the local people and encourage them to translate these into concrete projects and solutions. We assist during this process and the realization of their projects.
